Hyperemesis Gravidarum

Being pregnant is a blessing for most of women, especially for ones who have been trying and waiting for the baby. Once a woman is positive getting pregnant then the days are starting to change, the journey of 9-full-month is just about to begin.
In first trimester, usually pregnant woman will feel nausea. It is a normal common thing that happened in first months of pregnancy, pregnant woman start to vomit occasionally in first 4-6 weeks. People usually call it as a ‘morning sickness’, though it doesn’t always happen in the morning. Some people even assume that that symptom is a sign of someone is getting pregnant, which is not absolutely true.

The exact cause of the nausea feeling is unknown. Many experts and studies believe that it is related to the HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) level and estrogen level. Its level is increased a lot in multiple pregnancy, and a woman with twin fetus inside usually vomit more than normal ones. While other causes like genetics are still uncertain, many doctors also believe that mostly it is related with psychological condition.
In normal condition, the ‘nausea and vomit’ feeling will be gradually decreasing by the age of 14-16 weeks of pregnancy. If it still happens after the 1st trimester, or if the vomit is becoming worse, then a complete work up should be done. So, hyperemesis gravidarum means the severe form of ‘morning sickness’ that will affect the balance health level of the pregnant mom. The treatment will firstly concern about the need of rest for the affected mother, and replacing the fluids that had been lost before. Some additional antiemetics and antihistamine, and even corticostreoids can be useful in treating a patient. Close monitoring is important in this case.

As long as the pregnant mom can manage to keep some food down, and drink enough fluids, the baby’s health generally won’t be threatened. And a healthy pregnant woman should manage her psychological health also, to bring the holistic well-being for the 9-month-wonderful journey.

popping a pimple

I've just surfed in internet when I found this interesting topic that I wanna share for you. This article is coming from a dermatologist (Thanks dr. Benabio!), and since this advise is from a certified dermatologist, you all surely can trust this step-by-step procedures.
How many times when you're having pimples and you're feeling the urge to pop it out? Yes, it is not recommended, but if you feel that you can't bear doing that please feel free follow this advise.

Vitamin C

Again, I would like to discuss about some healthy tips for you.. And today the focus will be vitamin C.
As we all know, vitamin C is very good for our health. A recent study published in Seminars in Preventive and Alternative Medicine that looked at over 100 studies over 10 years revealed a growing list of benefits of vitamin C.
Vitamin C is giving lots of benefits, such as: skin health, immune system, cardiovascular health, and so many other things.

When it then comes to the amount of vitamin C that is needed to be consumed daily, some experts believe that the RDA number is not enough. They - including myself - will recommend minimal dose of 500 mg vitamin C daily. There's no need to be worried, the dose is safe, since the exceeded vitamin C will be excreted. Vitamin C is water-soluble, and it can easily be absorbed both in food and pill form, and also if you have it by injection.

Vitamin C is one well-known antioxidants that can protect against damage caused by free radicals. We live in a world full of pollution, and we surely will need protective factor such as vitamin C to maintain our holistic health. For the skin, it can prevent aging process and prevent wrinkle, and also vitamin C is needed in collagen formation. Our immune system are guaranteed by enough amount of vitamin C.

The foods richest in vitamin C are citrus fruits, green peppers, strawberries, tomatoes, broccoli, white potatoes, and sweet potatoes. Other good sources include dark leafy greens, cantaloupe, papaya, mango, watermelon, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage, red peppers, raspberries, blueberries, winter squash, and pineapples.

So, as a conclusion, vitamin C brings a series of benefits for our health, and unless the acidity that can affect someone's stomach, vitamin C has no other negative side effects.

Sex is healhty

Hello, everyone..
Today I wanna share a little bit about 'the most interesting' topic. So why don't you sit back for a while, have your hot tea with you while reading this article?

As I surfed around my favorite medical website (www.webmd.com), I found an article that might brighten up your day. Yes, it's about sex. I'm discussing it now from medical point of view.

Some researchers do believe that sex itself is good for our health. Often we're too embarrassed to discuss about it, it seems like that sex is a taboo-thing-to-discuss. But here I will sort out 10 good reasons that sex is healthy (let me give one special important note here: it is healthy if you do it with your husband or wife).

1. Sex relieves stress
Sex can reduce blood pressure and stress level. If you do it right, with right partner, in right time and place, it will bring you benefits for managing the stress.
2. Sex boosts immune level
Experts made a study that people who do regular sex (once or twice a week) will have higher immunity level.
3. Sex burns calories
I had written an article that kissing is healthy, because it burns hundreds of calories if you do it intensely in an hour. And so does sex activities. Research shows that thirty-minute session can burn 85 calories averagely. So, it's one option of great exercise, isn't it?
4. Sex boosts self-esteem
I read this morning in the newspaper that female athlete can perform much better if the night before the match, she had sexual session. And yeah for sure, sex can bring you comfort, physically and psychologically.
5. Sex improves cardiovascular health
Do it till you sweat, then you will have a healthy heart. The researchers also found that having sex twice or more a week reduced the risk of fatal heart attack by half for the men, compared with those who had sex less than once a month.
6. Sex improves intimacy
Having a healthy relationship will need holistic care in every aspects, and it will include sex. Often couples solve their problems in bed. Having sex and orgasms increases levels of the hormone oxytocin, the so-called love hormone, which helps us bond and build trust.
7. Sex reduces pain
When you are in 'heaven', the body will release a hormone called endorphine. It is very useful in reducing pain.
8. Sex reduces prostate cancer risk
Great news, gentlemen! Studies had shown that young men with regular sexual activities will have lower risk of getting prostate cancer in older age.
9. Sex strengthens pelvic muscle
For women, doing a few pelvic floor muscle exercises known as Kegels during sex offers a couple of benefits. You will enjoy more pleasure, and you'll also strengthen the area and help to minimize the risk of incontinence later in older age.
10. Sex improves better sleeping
The oxytocin released during orgasm will help promote good sleep (that's why there's a book titled "Why do men fall asleep after sex?" hehe..). And having a good sleep is really healthy

Rh-incompatibility

Hello everyone, how're you all doing?

Today I wanna discuss a little bit about Rh incompatibility. Rh is code for rhesus. Few weeks ago, one of my friend sent me short message asking me about that 'pregnancy problem' thing. So since it's quite important for every of us to know - especially for soon-to-be moms - then I will share a little knowledge about it.
Most of us know already that we have blood type, the A, B, AB, and O. But maybe some of us don't know (or even never heard) of Rh-blood type. One can have Rh-negative or Rh-positive. You can determine that by checking yours in the laboratory.

So, the important thing about this in pregnancy is: when a pregnant-mom has Rh-negative and the baby has Rh-positive (it must come from the father's) then it can bring Rh-incompatibility, because the mother will produce "Rh-antibody" to attack the 'foreign Rh-positive' inside fetal blood.
Usually the problem will not occur in the first pregnancy until the delivery (or miscarriage, abortion) when the blood of the fetus is exposed to mother's blood. So, generally the Rh-incompatibility problem will tend to happen in the second pregnancy with Rh-positive baby and Rh-negative mother.
When a mom has Rh-positive, the problem will never occur (no matter the baby has Rh-negative or positive), because the mother's immune system will not create any antibodies.

What is the danger of Rh-incompatibility? If an Rh-negative mother had delivered Rh-positive baby (without any interference from medical professional), then when she has her second pregnancy, her body will create some 'immune antibodies' and attack the baby's blood, creating an anemia condition inside the fetus. The mild one will have nothing to be worried, but the severe form of incompatibility will need blood transfusion for the baby.

How can we know our type of Rh? It means that every couple needs to have prenatal screening for that. And if the mother has Rh-negative, and the spouse has Rh-positive, then the couple can go to the doctor for further advise and management.

So, I hope my short explanation will give you all clear understanding about that problem. Prevention is much better than the cure. Stay healthy always..

cold remedies - some tricks

How're you all doing? I hope you all are in healthy condition...
Lately I find a lot of my friends getting flu/cold. Yeah, the unpredicted weather, the business (over)load in the first month of this new year, can give us imbalance in our health status. That's why it is important to keep ourselves healthy by strengthening our immune system. But, don't worry for you who already had infected with flu/cold, here I will share some easy tips to overcome those problems.

1. Drink plenty of fluids, to prevent the dehydration. And sure you can go for warm or hot ones, because it can help break your congestion. (Hot tea can sometimes also reduce the tickle in your throat)
2. While you're drinking hot stuffs, you can inhale the steam to ease the congestion and drippy nose.
3. Blow your nose often, in right way. But just don't do it too hard, because you will either break the tiny blood vessels inside your nose or the phlegm will pass back into your ear, causing earache.
4. Get rest. Yes! It's important to get rest. It's just like focusing the energy inside your body to win the 'immune battle'.
5. Gargle with warm salt water, it can moist the sore throat and bring temporary relief.
6. Sleep with extra pillow under your head to help you relieve the congested nasal passage.
7. Consume natural remedies containing zinc, vitamin C (you can go for multivitamin also for sure), echinacea. It helps, trust me.

So, that's all for now. Some simple steps and tricks to help you manage your cold.
Okay then, stay healthy always..

Ovulation

Few months ago I did post an article on my previous website, www.doctoradhi.com, about ovulation.
These days, I got some calls from friends -females- who are still somewhat confused about how to determine the ovulation date. For newlyweds, this issue will be quite important related to the fertility matter.

Ovulation is one part of the menstrual cycle that is -very important-responsible of the release of the ovum (human egg cell) to be participated in the reproduction process. If the ovum then meets the sperms, there the reproduction process just begins.

Before I share more about the ovulation, I’ll give a brief overview about the menstrual cycle. Menstrual cycle can be divided into 3 phases : follicular phase, ovulatory phase, and luteal phase. When a woman has 28-days-menstrual cycle, it means that the first 14 days is the follicular phase, and day 14 is exactly the ovulation day, and the rest 14 days are the luteal phase.

Here is the simple diagram to explain when the ovulation happens. It's simply -always- 14 days before the next menstrual cycle starts. While most women cannot predict when the next cycle will start, it makes them guessing when actually the 'fertile day' is. (But hopefully this diagram will help)

Prenatal Care

What a pregnant woman should know and prepare -especially in her first pregnancy- is the prenatal care.
Prenatal care is all about comprehensive medical care for women, before and during her pregnancy. Prenatal care is important and it should be started as soon as a woman predicted being pregnant.

Some of the importance of having an early prenatal healthcare are :
1. Determine the health status of the mother and the baby.
2. Determine the potential problems and prevent them as early as possible.
3. Start a holistic plan for the next 9 months, during pregnancy.
The prenatal care will include : general medical check up (physical and laboratory examination), education for the patient, previous medical history, and other specific obstetrical things.

It is recommended for pregnant woman to visit healthcare center or her medical doctor in regular interval, following this schedule :
• Every 4 weeks for the first 28 weeks of pregnancy
• Every 2-3 weeks until 36 weeks of gestation, and
• Weekly after 36 weeks
• 4-6 weeks post delivery

Here I attach the pdf version of the prenatal care guideline.

Pregnancy : Myths vs Facts

Today I'm gonna discuss about pregnancy topic. I find that many people (old-fashioned-culture-minded) still believe in some ridiculous myths.
"Avoid housework stuffs", "Don't drink any sodas", "Having sex during pregnancy is forbidden", "Don't eat spicy food", and so many other sayings.

Here I will describe some pregnancy myths that just make me giggling.
1. Don't drink coffee. Coffee is okay, but drinking too much coffee has a tendency -based on some research studies- to a low-weight birth.
2. Drinking soda is harmful. I will honestly say that soda is not good even for us who are not pregnant. But if someone relates drinking soda to a harmful effect on the baby, I will loudly laugh for that.
3. No sex please. This is one of the most FAQ. In most cases there is no reason as to why you and your partner cannot continue to make love during the course of pregnancy, but be careful if you are having high risk for pre-term labor. So please don't hesitate to consult this with your doctor.
4. Drinking soy milk will make your baby's skin white and clean. I never heard any medical research based relating that issue with the appearance of baby's skin. Genetic talks, guys!
5. Avoid house works. If you do your house works too much, it might harm your baby, especially in the first term of your pregnancy. But having light work will not make you into trouble; your body knows the limit.
6. Glow means a girl. This is also one of the common myth. If you start glowing and look more beautiful during your pregnancy you’re sure to have a girl; if you don’t, it’s a boy. This is the science fact: all pregnant women glow in the second trimester of pregnancy due to better circulation and a sense of well-being. It bears no relationship to the sex of the baby.
7. Never consume medicine while you're pregnant. It is wise for you to always consult about it with your doctor.
8. No computer. Come on! There's no correlation between logging in to computer will affect the baby. Otherwise, you can have a lot of knowledge from internet about your pregnancy, right?
9. Umbilical cord myth. A pregnant woman shouldn't put her arms over her head because the cord will wrap around the baby's neck. Actually, the normal movement of the mother doesn't really affect the umbilical cord.
10. The shape and size of the tummy determine baby's sex. 'If your tummy is sticking out and not one seeing you from behind would guess you’re pregnant, it’s a girl!’ If that's the truth, then all ultrasonologists of the world need to look for another profession! Basically, let me tell you that there's no correlation whatsoever with the sex of the baby.

Feel free to post some comments, and maybe you have some questions regarding this topic, just drop it, and I'll be glad to discuss about it.

Finally, "Have a healthy life!"

Tea for our health

I just read my google reader, and I would like to share to you the benefit of tea.

Some of us might already have the 'good' habit of drinking tea - in every of their meals or occasionally in high-tea-time. But the good news is that tea -almost all tea- contains some amount of antioxidants, and as we all know that antioxidants are good for our health, and being honest, it is really required in our body.

If you allow me to go little further with medical terms, tea contains polyphenol which is a chemical compound that can be found in plants, that is believed having antioxidant effect in it.

Research shows us that an average cup of brewed green or black tea has 150-200 mg of flavonoids. So, having 2 cups of tea per day will be a good start for us to have a healthier lifestyle.

As a closing, we live our life now in a world that is no longer healthy (sorry but that's the fact). Everyday everywhere we live with a lot of pollution, chemical things that are not good for our health. We do need some balancing process for that. While we often are exposed to the 'oxidant' - famously known as the bad free radicals, we then need the antioxidant to counterpart those unhealthy substances.
